View Full Version : Seeking a Radeon 9800 Pro

Hello all.

I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere.. online, auctions, or stores where I might find either a Radeon 9700 Pro (http://www.techwarelabs.com/reviews/video/ati_radeon9700p/) or preferably a Radeon 9800 Pro (http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/atiradeon9800pro.shtml). A 256 MB would be ideal, but a 128 will work. The best I've found so far is
Radeon 9700 Pro - $429 Retail.
Radeon 9800 Pro - $649 Retail.

I currently have an All-in-wonder 7500, 64MB and its just not cutting it for the new games I'm playing. I would like to get Doom III next and this current card just wouldn't do.

I've looked on ebay.ca and ebay.com and seen some pretty good prices around $200-$300 US. But leary of having a card shipped from the states. Anyone work at a computer store know of any killer specials or deals on either of the above cards I'm after?

Thanks
Kathleen

You should just accept a few more clients next week and you will easily cover the cost of the card!

Kathleen I will gladly barter a brand new Radeon 9800 pro for two hours of your time. I will be in Toronto next week, let me know by PM.

256mg!!! You gotta be doin some serious gamming to require a video card like that. I'm envious. Girth's offer sounds like a winner.

That's a serious video card and you're not going to get one cheap. It's like buying a Mercedes.

Unfortunately Doom III when it comes out will need it. I plan to upgrade my video too but I'm waiting for DoomIII b4 I make the investment.

You could try getting one OEM from some of the clone builders in Markham or anywhere else.

I dealt with Infonec in Markham and Miss. They seem pretty good.

i am speechless.. truely..
something just shock me when cathy say something like, is it because she said she want a video card worth more than $200? is it because she wants to complate the up coming game of the year? is it because she said she want a video card with 256 mb ram? it is because she said she wants an ATI video card?

i dont know. but cathy, here is my honest advice.
dont buy it untill your game is out. and who in the world would want a card like that? it is just too much, i am saying this, is because i feel that money is not easy to make. for a card that cost $435, forget it, it is not worth it. you trade money with your dignity. and that card isnot worth a cent of your dignity.

I think what you have right now is very good. and if u really really want to buy it, i have a link for you.

http://www.logiccomputerhouse.com/

this is a website for a computer store located in mississauga, and i will tell the owner to give u discount. they have it in store right now.

just incase u are in search for a better card than 9800, u can check out the Nvidia's Gforce FX 9500 ULTRA.
it beat crap out of ATI'S 9800
here is a picture shows u the comparison

OH MY GOD, a girl geek! :)

I have a GF4200 128MB, and it's great for current games, but DOOM III is going to kick its ass.

Be careful buying ATI cards. Some ATI cards will not work with some computers. I tried a Radeon card in my HP Pavillion 933P3 and it wouldn,t boot up. I spent hours trying to get it to work and when I talked to the techies at Future Shop I found out about the incompatibility. i ended up getting a nvidia card and it worked great right away.
ATI make great cards but they aren't always universal. Anyway, just FYI.

BigGuy26 - The problem is not buying the card for full price, that I can handle. I just know that, like the Radeon 9500, 9600, then 9700, the 9800 will all too soon be out done. I'm just looking for a better deal then retail is all. You know, kind of like what guys come to TERB seeking.

Girth - That is a nice offer, and that specific card clearly is more then my 2 hr rate. However, without having seen you before, or knowing you, I'm sorry but just can't accept that offer. The main reason, is if the card is a defect, or similar, I'll be screwed... twice.

GlavaMan - Well, looks like Doom III could use it, and its just about being ready for the newest games...lol

Cinema Face - Ineed it is a serious card. Like I mentioned, I have seen them new on Ebay for around $200-$300 US which is nice. But I'm leary of the seller/shipping. I agree OEM is an idea. Does the place you mentioned have a site?

Cruise - Cathy? Ack. If your gonna chop my name back, please keep the "K". But I really prefer Kathleen. So I shocked you huh? lol

The card I have is nice, but I bought a game last week - Postal 2 and my current card wasnt enough. I am able to play the game, but the graphics are choppy, and not that great compared to older games I have. No way this card I have now will work for Doom III. I had a look at the site you provided.. what a retail on that 9800 Pro. Can you PM what kind of discount you could get? Also, do they have the 9700 Pro?

bishop - If it's not a Radeon, and 9700 or better, your not even getting in..hehe

500miles - I'm not a Geek :-(
I just love my violent games ..lol

traveler196 - Thanks for the heads up. But I have an all-in-wonder now in my machine, and it works prefect with my system. Its a pretty new P4. I'm sure a 9700 or 9800 Pro will be fine. If not, I'll go for GeForce FX 5200 or 5800 Ultra.

Thanks all
Kathleen

No need to go elsewhere Kathleen. I emailed you to let you know to save your money, I have an extra one laying around you can have.

As a note to Traveler196, ATI cards are no worse than Nvidia cards when it comes to system problems. Most likely the problems are related to chipsets nowadays for that.

The fastest card on the market is the 9800 Pro. Hands down. The 5900 Ultra is very close behind. But, then again, R360 on the way from ATI, so the lead will lengthen :)

TongueBoy - Just like that, my prayers were answered. :)
Heading to the email now.

Thanks very much

Hey has anybody here seen the preview videos for Half Life 2? Looks sweet too!

I'm hoping by the time those two games are out, the video cards that can play them at 1024x768, 60fps are in the $300 range.

Probably going to want a 3ghz class processor at that time too.

I play Desert Storm on 2.4gh ATI Radeon 9700 I think. And it's not enough. A friend has the same system and we play at the sametime , and he lives across town. While playing we are on the phone. he experiences problems and I don't or sometimes it's the other way around.

HE belives his system is to old for the game and he bought the system in December.

For gaming you have to purchase the latest every 4 - 6 months just to keep up. And sometimes it's not enough.

Postal 2 another fan ! Iwaited a long time for it to come out. What day are you on Kathleen?

Kathleen

mrpolarbear - I heard of this game through a friend and thought to try it out. It was banned at Future Shop, and another local store, but I found it at that electronic boutique.

I finished the game ( Mon- Fri ) about two days ago. It stated I had finished the game, showed my grusome stats, and challenged me to play again with new items and such. So I am. I'm now on Tues of the second time around trying to beat it again. Be warned, Friday is insane with the swat teams..lol

BTW - there are mods you can download from the postal site. With them, you can see the private area of woman you kill, shoot off limbs, and cut off heads with the shovel. You know, for full postal effect..hehe.

Thanks
Kathleen

Y a them swat guys are tough but they dont botheryou much when you have the cop uniform on. and if they do i just piss fire on them .. im on thursday in round 2 in the napalm factoryand and then back home. i am suprised that it is banned up there cause a bout 4 yrs. ago i found the add on special delivery for the original Postal in a shop at the mapleview mall in burlington while on holiday . Have you played the original Postal? I wish i could get the elephants to follow me thru town they could do some damage. well off to the forums on the runningwithscissors site there are some real loonies there but i have learned a few tricks about the game. i do have a few mods but i cant wait till mp comes out. Oh about the shovel, i can kock the guys head off kick it around a little to get it waste high then smack it with the shovel and watch it go. just like playing tee ball.

mrpolarbear - Just a thought. Can you imagine what people here who have never seen this game are thinking of us two?

Thanks for the tips on the game. Using the police uniform is a thought. I never used it, as I like the clothes he has normally. Oh, but when the guys from the cemetary rape you, and dress you like the gimp.. Ugh. Not nice. I lost a ton of money too at that point in the game. Gary Coleman was also funny in the game, and tough to kill.

I've booted decapitated heads around, but never thought of kicking, then batting with the shovel. Good idea.

I've never played the original postal. A friend told me of Postal 2, and I had to try it. I have seen something called Postal Plus out now too.

Last, the Elephants were pretty cool too. I didn't think you could kill them. I stood on a ledge and hit one with my night stick for 10min. It wouldnt die, so I just blasted it with my shotgun...lol
Oh, how did you like the Bin Laden wannabes? Those guys are tough, and pack some serious weapons.

Off to play it now

I'm in the market for a new video card and so, I found this older thread to be quite interesting. But how did the story end?

Kathleen: Did you get a 9800 Pro and if so, how did you find it? I'm not on the bleeding edge and I suspect that it would more than meet my needs even now.

And just curious where matters now stand. You must have upgraded by now.

I don't even think people realise that this is a very old thread. And that the card they are talking about is not in production anymore.

Read the dates on this thread. They are all very old.

You can pick up the card at Future shop because it is discontinued retail by ATI.

In my post, I mentioned this was an older thread but folks do leap before they look.

Anyway, what's happened to Kathleen? I haven't been around for a while. Egad, has she left TERB for good?

Badkat is still around. You can catch her on the web at her website. She is Hammertown based and I don't think she needs to be all that busy with TERB, (most of you are from toronto and won't make the commute to Hamilton).

Her website is www.badkat.net (http://www.badkat.net)

Hope I am not breaking any advertising bans here. If I am sorry Mods :)
