Being a bit of a novice, are SP turned off if you have one drink before the encounter to loosen up? (ie smelling booze right off
the bat). That's 1, not 5 or 6.

If it's outcall I think it might be better to wait until she arrives and then share a bottle of wine with her.
As far as incalls go - first impressions do count and IMO having a bit of beer breath might work against you. It's certainly not something I would do.

If I had an SP come over my place then I really don't care what she thinks about my drinking habit. Remember she's coming over MY PLACE. As for incalls, I've been treated a with disrespect a few occasions because of being a little more intoxicated than usual. This is understanding though and I don't blame them. But yet again YMMV in every aspect.

I agree with Fred. IF you're going to consume alcohol, it's better to wait until the lady arrives, then share a drink while engaging in casual conversation.
Especially when seeing a client for the first time, SP's are on guard - therefore, I would not do anything that could potentially create a bad impression.

Yes, have a nice bottle of the lady's favourite or your favourite wine breathing or chilling for when she arrives. Some of the best sessions I've had have always started with a bottle of fine wine.
But remember to ask the lady first when you book if she would like some wine (not whine, mind you) when she arrives.
